It was while wearing an itchy waitress uniform in a near-bankrupt restaurant that Cathy Thorne took stock of her life and found it wanting. She was nearly 30, and what she wanted more than anything was to explore the creativity she’d left behind with childhood.
In her spare time she'd draw, paint and make jewellery, but it wasn't until she enrolled in art school that she committed to fully discovering her artistic side. Not an easy task, since most days she found herself paralyzed with drawer's block in front of an easel trying to tune out the instructor’s warning that the likelihood of succeeding in the arts was close to nil, and that most students would probably end up waiting tables!
With just two months until graduation and a feeling that a creative career would remain an unfulfilled dream, Cathy finally moved past her fear and began having fun. She sketched figures that looked like the drawings she had made as a child, added candid observations and Everyday People Cartoons poured forth effortlessly.
That was 12 years ago. Today, Cathy lives and works on a quiet street in Toronto with her husband, daughter and son, who offer her love, valuable new insights and enough challenges to inspire a lifetime's worth of comedic material.
