A Thank You Note from a Lovely Customer

Back in the day.

Almost everyday.

I’d get an email from a business person that went something like this:

Hi Cathy. I love your cartoons, and would like to use one in my newsletter (or PowerPoint presentation, web site, etc). Please let me know what the cost is. Thank you.

Today, not so much.

Sometimes, I’ll get an email that goes something like this:

hey. i’m a very important person with a large following. i’m going to use your work to help promote my business which is really good exposure for you.

Most of the time, they don’t even ask or inform me. I guess the very important person with a large following just assumes my gratitude, and uses my work without permission, often without credit, and occasionally making changes to my work to suit their needs.

This used to make me angry, but today, it mostly makes me sad.

That’s why it was so nice when Susan E. Collins, Ph.D., an Associate Professor from the University of Washington emailed to ask about using one of my cartoons in a talk she was giving.

I emailed the cartoon to her in the proper format. I then emailed an invoice, and when she mailed her check, she took the time to include a thank you note.
